NOW IS OUR CHANCE for a CAGE FREE CAPE TOWN!
We have a unique opportunity: most of the battery cages in the Western Cape are empty!
October 2017: the H5N8 strain of Avian Influenza has devastated the egg industry and led to the culling of 70% of the province’s laying flock.
Please farmers, supermarkets and consumers: now’s the time to go cage-free! Make Cape Town the first cage-free city in Africa.
Here’s why: Because a world-class city treats its animals well
Over the last 60 years, laying hens have been confined in barren battery cages like this.
Five to a cage, they have had a space allowance each that measures 75% of an A4 sheet of paper! They suffer behavioural disorders due to stress as well as painful hyperkeratosis on their feet (corns and calluses) from standing on wire for the two full years of their optimal egg-laying lives. Their suffering is relentless.
