Blast Brand Catalysts, a leading johannesburg advertising agency which has chosen our ‘Better Lives’ rating as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility effort. 

 

 

Animal Voice is in the process of introducing a Better Lives rating system which farmers can use to show the level of care given to their animals. 

Farmers will be encouraged to invite Animal Voice to view their farms after which our stick-on rating system will be available to them  to place on their products, valid for a year.

Broiler Chickens:

Five Stars includes all of the following:

 

  • Day-time stocking density not more than 5 birds per sq m with access to open air runs mainly covered in vegetation

  • Continual access to water, food and fresh air

  • Night-time stocking density not more than 15 birds per sq m; minimum of 6 hours continuous darkness from day 3

  • Catching: Birds caught in dim light, one at a time, with  both hands holding wings close to body, and carried upright to crates  

  • Transport: crates mechanically lifted onto truck and journey to abattoir not more than ????

BETTER LIVES takes it as a ‘given’ that the animals are provided with fresh water daily, fresh food daily and respect 24/7 .  The Five Star Rating is over and above these ‘givens’.

Laying Hens:  

Eggs from hens in battery cages or enriched battery cages = zero rating

 

  • Hens are kept in barns at a stocking density not exceeding ???

  • Hens are kept in barns with pop holes to an outside camp mainly covered in vegetation at a stocking density not exceeding ???

  • Outdoor egg production in Eggmobiles. Hens have access to outdoors daily. Stocking density: ??  Eggmobiles are moved to fresh pasture at regular intervals.

  • Outdoor egg production in Eggmobiles. Hens have access to outdoors daily. Eggmobiles are moved to fresh pasture daily.

  • At end of lay, hens are slaughtered in an abattoir not more than ??km away and are not sold live to cull depots.

Dairy Cows:

 

  • Cows have day-time access to grass pastures

  • Grass composes the bulk of the cow’s diet

  • Cows are milked only once a day so as to ensure their milk production is limited to around 12 litres per day

  • Cows raise their own calves on pasture until natural weaning at about 6 months old

  • Illnesses such as laminitis and mastitis that are caused by over-milking, are almost non-existent.

Pigs:

 

  • No confinement  in stalls, farrowing crates or pens  

  • Daily access to camps mostly covered in vegetation, at a stocking density not exceeding ? pigs per ?.  

  • No ear clipping, tail docking, castration or teeth clipping required

  • Transport to slaughter does not exceed  ?? hours

  • Gassing of pigs with CO2 is prohibited

Lamb:

 

  • Shepherd guards flock

  • Grazing land makes provision for  shade

  • Predator-control is non-lethal

  • Lambs are not mutilated by castration, tail-docking or ear-clipping

  • Transport to slaughter is at a stocking density of ?? and is no longer than ?? hours, in a road-worthy truck with canopy

Cows:

 

  • No confinement  in stalls, farrowing crates or pens  

  • Daily access to camps mostly covered in vegetation, at a stocking density not exceeding ? pigs per ?.  

  • No ear clipping, tail docking, castration or teeth clipping required

  • Transport to slaughter does not exceed  ?? hours
